An update from Dwina: Headstone Robin Gibb

I want to update you on the progress on Robin’s headstone for his burial place in Thame. I am hoping that it will be completed by late May to commemorate the third anniversary of Robin’s passing, or in June for the anniversary of the funeral. It is also appropriate that “Saved By The Bell”, the collection of Robin’s early solo recordings, will released around the same time.

The photos here show the progress being made by Martin Cook, the award winning sculptor who has displayed his work at the Chelsea Flower Show where he achieved Gold Medal status. The headstone is known as Kilkenny Blue Marble: a very hard limestone from Kilkenny, Ireland. Robin was very fond of this stone and we have several sculptures in our garden made from this same rock, carved by Michael Cooper. It was Michael that recommended Martin Cook for the headstone.

Robin is buried at St. Mary’s Church in Thame, which is a beautiful building, and previously a Royal Minster Church for Anglo Saxon Kings. It is a Grade 1 listed building, and there are many regulations governing the style of headstones in the church grounds to ensure that they are in keeping with the ancient building. Headstones are not usually decorated on both sides, but we have had permission to do this, and the decoration and words on reverse side of the headstone will be a tribute to Robin’s life as a Bee Gee.

We have taken the time to create something very special; I did not want to rush in creating this permanent memorial to Robin. I will let you all know when the headstone is ready, and the date for the ceremony.

ROBIN GIBB: I'M SO PROUD OF THE BOMBER BOYS MEMORIAL

HE conquered the world as a pop star and is winning his fight against cancer but Robin Gibb’s “proudest” achievement will honour 55,000 men he never met.

The Bee Gees legend was filled with emotion as he paid his first visit to Britain’s new Bomber Command Memorial.

The epic structure, still under scaffolding, will stand sentinel in London’s Green Park near Hyde Park Corner, a behemoth sculpture of pillars and statues which will forever remind the nation of the sacrifices made by the RAF’s brave bomber crews during the Second World War.

It is a project that he, Dooleys singer Jim Dooley and RAF veterans have championed over the past three years, raising £6million for its construction and perpetual upkeep.

Express readers donated £500,000 to the memorial, a sum matched by Sunday Express owner Richard Desmond. Other large contributions came from entrepreneurs Lord Ashcroft and John Caudwell, while tens of thousands of members of the public donated to the cause in smaller but vital ways.

 

  On Thursday Robin, 62, scrambled up ladders to take a full tour of the 50ft structure, where master craftsmen are still working to hand carve the immense spans of Portland Stone. In the distance behind him the blue RAF standard could be seen fittingly fluttering from the Royal Air Force Club in Piccadilly.

Daring night-time raids cost the lives of 55,573 airmen of Bomber Command. It was when the Bee Gee came face to face with the 10ft crest emblazoned with the words “Bomber Command Royal Air Force” and the RAF emblem, that the real significance of the achievement hit home.

“This is honestly the proudest thing I’ve ever done,” said Robin, who looks markedly better since the dark days of his fight against colon cancer. “It was so important to finally see that the brave airmen who risked their lives every night to fly bombing raids over Germany and shorten the war were finally honoured, and now it is happening. This memorial is bigger than even the Wellington Memorial and will still be here long after we are gone. It will last for ever.

SAVED BY THE BELL – The Collected Works of Robin Gibb: 1969-70

This compilation of Robin’s solo recordings from 1969-1970 is a 3 CD collection and includes the classic album Robins Reign, the legendary unreleased album, Sing Slowly Sisters, plus BBC Sessions and interviews. The 63 track package includes 46 unreleased or rare tracks. Compiled and produced by Andrew Sandoval, it also contains a 24 page booklet, with rare memorabilia and photos, and liner notes by Bob Stanley.

Barry Gibb announces return to Redcliffe for opening of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Bee Gees Way

BARRY Gibb cannot wait to return to Redcliffe in September for the opening of Bee Gees Way stage two and is planning a longer stay this time to relive some special childhood memories.

Stage two will be officially opened on September 11 with Barry Gibb headlining a community event as part of Redcliffe Festival celebrations.
“It’s been an honour to be personally involved in this project. I can’t wait to share the day with the community, fans and friends,” he said.
“My memories of my time in Redcliffe are as vivid today as when I was running around barefoot with my brothers exploring its many treasures. It has never left me.”

Cr Sutherland said Mr Gibb planned to spend “quite some time in Redcliffe doing some things in his own space” away from the spotlight. He has apparently made a list of some of the places he wants to visit.
“Just like stage one (which opened in February 2013), Barry has been heavily involved in developing and approving the new concepts and content,” he said.

 

“The next stage of Bee Gees Way…will take the attraction to a new level and incorporate some of the suggestions we have received from locals and visitors.”
Detailed plans are under wraps but Cr Sutherland said a permanent shade structure spanning the length of Bee Gees Way would be included as would more seating and better signage. When asked if music would be played in the upgraded attraction, Cr Sutherland said the council would “incorporate everything that had been requested of us” without turning it into a “disco”.
The project is expected to cost $2 million, with about half to be spent on practical upgrades such as the shade structure, the other half to be spent on the “Bee Gees component”.
“I wouldn’t do anything if I didn’t think it would be good for the region,” Cr Sutherland said.
He wants people to judge the finished product and said subsequent promotion for the region would prove it was money well spent.

You can hardly talk about the disco days without recognizing the Bee Gees were at the cornerstone of that short but exciting phenomena. “Saturday Night Fever” sold more than 30 million copies and we could just not keep up with the orders. Of the Gibb brothers, Barry seen here and his youngest brother, Andy were the biggest heart throbs of that generation. Andy died too early and Barry is the only Gibb still alive.
